3 Easy Steps to Finding Your Favorite Jeans

Let’s talk denim. Denim is the new everything. The fabric is so versatile nowadays. There are chambray shirts, denim skirts, joggers, tank tops, and so much more. As an adolescent, I had no idea how to find jeans. I would just take what my mother bought me or WORSE… I would go to the mall with my skinny as a rail bestie and try to wear the same styles as her. I always ended up with jeans that were not very comfortable and even more unflattering. The waist was too small. My butt would hang out if I sat down. My muffin top (that was created by the waist of the jeans because I have hips) would show if I had to bend over. It was a nightmare. And looking back at photos, I am so happy I learned how to find my favorite jeans because my jeans used to be so wrong for my body. After a lot of trial and error, I have the tools to help you find your favorite jeans too.

Step 1: Find your budget. There’s no sense in going to a store (like Madewell) that is on the pricier side and finding the jeans you cannot live without. Because if it’s not in your budget, then you shouldn’t buy it. On the other hand, if you are saving up for the perfect pair, or waiting for a sale to find exactly what you want, then go for it. I never buy clothes full price. Except for my wedding dress (which was less than $300). The denim that I am loving and are my favorites are from: J.Crew Factory, Abercrombie, Target and Old Navy. I’m keeping my eye out for some Everlane jeans and Madewell ones too but I am only buying it if I can afford it. I’m going to keep looking for Madewell jeans on sale second hand. And I’m saving up for the Everlane jeans. Once I have the money, then I’ll purchase them. Moral of the story: make sure you know your budget before going shopping for jeans (in store or online).

J Crew Jeans.jpg

Jean Details: J.Crew in size 25 (and I also own them in a size 26 for a looser fit) from @J.Crew Factory.

Step 2: Try on more than one size. The size of jeans vary so much depending on the style, brand, and your body. Don’t be afraid to try on multiple sizes. I have J.Crew jeans in 25s and 26s. The 26s fit oversized and the 25s are more fitted. I also bought a pair of Everlane jeans (second hand for $25) and they were a size 26 which is my usual size. I didn’t even get these jeans past my butt to zip them up. So, don’t let the number get to you. With all the different brands, there are a lot of inconsistencies when it comes to sizing. Use the sizing guide on the website if you are shopping online and make sure to measure your body to compare. Whenever I buy jeans online, I read all of the comments to see if I need to size up or down or stay true to size. And remember, all that matters is that the jeans fit YOUR body.

Step 3: Know what you’re looking for (or at least have a general idea). Be sure you know what kind of jeans you want. Do you want ripped jeans? Boyfriend jeans? Mom jeans? Vintage jeans? Cropped jeans? Skinny jeans? High waisted jeans? There are SO many options that you have to be clear about what you’re looking for. With that said, don’t be afraid to try new styles and new colors. I thought I would be a mid-rise skinny jean wearer for life. And as it turns out, I love high rise mom jeans and a tighter fitting boyfriend jean. I also never thought I would own a pair of super light jeans and I found a pair at Target that are one of my new favorites. The jeans that are my favorite, fit the proportions of my body and are super flattering. So, don’t be afraid to try on styles that you never imagined wearing. Your favorite style might be something you haven’t found yet!

Tell me in the comments below: Where are your favorite jeans from and why are they your favorite?
