My Clean(ish) 5 Min Makeup Routine
Let’s talk clean beauty. When I found out I was pregnant last April, I decided to clean up my skincare and makeup products. I did this because my skin was absorbing everything I was putting on it and so was my baby. This was the first time I had to think of someone other than myself - my baby! Our skin is the biggest organ on our bodies. According to National Geographic, “Skin acts as a waterproof, insulating shield, guarding the body against extremes of temperature, damaging sunlight, and harmful chemicals.” The ugly truth for most of us: our makeup is full of harmful chemicals that we put on our skin every day. I used to be a die hard cheap makeup wearer (if you’re guilty of this right now, it’s okay). The pull towards cheap makeup is the affordability and accessibility of it. But, they have chemicals that are harmful to our bodies. The good news - there are plenty of affordable clean makeup options these days.
Before I get into my clean(ish) makeup routine, I want to tell you more about what could be in your makeup. Did you know that US law has very little power in regulating companies from using harmful chemicals in everyday products? Here’s an excerpt from The Guardian, “A study by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics indicates that women use an average of nine personal care products each day, exposing themselves to a mixture of over 100 individual chemicals. In 2003, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that women had significantly higher levels of 10 of the 116 toxic chemicals they tested for than men. Three of the 10 chemicals were phthalates, a group commonly found in health and beauty products and linked to birth defects. In fact, almost any chemical – including those linked to breast cancer, hormone disruption, reproductive problems, and allergies – can be used in cosmetics.” As women, we need to understand the impact that these seemingly harmless ingredients have on our bodies. The consequences of something as simple as shampoo with phthalates is unimaginable. I am sharing this with you because I hope that by educating you, you will start to make small changes.
In my makeup routine, I use mostly clean products. As a recovering perfectionist, I’ve had to learn that messy is better than impeccable. The truth is that none of use are perfect. So if you’re wanting to start making the switch to clean beauty products, just start! Maybe start with your mascara or your bronzer. Little changes over time lead to big changes that are sustainable. Now, finally for my makeup routine. I also want to add, this is a no fuss approach with slapping things on and blending with your fingers. Since having a newborn, five minutes is about all I have while my little one is awake before he needs my full attention. Let’s get started!
Step 1: Sunscreen & Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer - After I wash my face, I apply a daily sunscreen. Then, I squirt my tinted moisturizer onto my finger tips and slap it onto my face. The Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer (I use color light) makes my skin so glowy. It’s a natural glow like I just chugged a gallon of water and only ate vegetables for a week. Ps - if you need a Beautycounter consultant, my friend Lindsae Metz is your girl.
Step 2: Ka-Brow Eyebrow Pomade - I use the little brush that comes with this pomade to fill and define my eyebrows. Again, this is a no fuss routine, so I don’t spend a long time making sure the shape is right. I use this in color 3.5 medium. This product works so well and it does come in a small container but it lasts for so long. I like that it gives you the ability to easily shape, fill, and define your brows.
Step 3: Revitalash Hi-Def Brow Gel - I like to use this brow gel to set my brows and make them look a tad fuller. It’s like mascara but for your eyebrows. This product does not flake and always looks natural. I feel like it gives me that laminated eyebrow look without the price tag.
Step 4: Bronzer - I swipe bronzer all over for a warm glow. My little trick is that I use it on my cheeks as a contour as well. I feel that using bronzer as a contour softens the look. And who doesn’t want to look like they’ve been sunkissed?
Step 5: Eyelash Curler - Curl your lashes. I don’t have a fancy eyelash curler and I like to purchase these eyelash curler refillable pads so I never have to purchase a new curler. I find the the best way to curl my lashes is to start from the bottom closest to my eyelid and open and close the curler all the way to the tips of my eyelashes. This method gives me a lift on all of my lashes.
Step 6: Uoma Drama Bomb Mascara - I love this mascara because it is infused with nourishing ingredients to not only give your lashes great volume, but to take care of them too. Every time I put my mascara on, I feel like I’m pampering my eyelashes. I use 2 coats of mascara. I try to let the coats dry in between applications. I’m a can’t live without mascara gal. This one is one of my favorites because it doesn’t flake and adds tons of volume and length. If you’re unsure about the mascara, you can always start with a travel sized tube.
Step 7 & 8: Ilia Multi-Stick - I love blush. I always have and I even have the pictures to prove it (but I’m going to spare myself the embarrassment of my teenage years haha). This multi-stick is awesome. I just swipe it on the apples of my cheeks and blend it in with my fingers. A little product goes a long way. Be sure to apply the blush directly to the apples of your cheeks and blend it towards your ear for a natural finish. An optional step is to use a blush brush to really make sure it’s blended. I use this same multi-stick for a lip color. I just swipe it on and that’s it!
Step 9: Highlighter - I like to use highlighter because it gives me that lit from within glow. I use my fingers to gently dab it on the tops of my cheekbones and right under my eyebrows. My mother was way ahead of her time because I can remember her swiping a beautiful natural looking shimmery color under her brows and always thinking how radiant she looked.
That’s it for this 5 min no fuss makeup routine! The clean makeup products are: sunscreen, dew skin tinted moisturizer, bronzer, mascara, lip and cheek multi-stick, and highlighter. My slap it on method works and I don’t plan on changing it anytime soon. Here’s to clean(ish) beauty!
